PRAYER GUIDE

We pray for the Anglican Church of Tanzania: for the Deanery of Liverpool South and Childwall and Area Dean Kip Crookes: for St Oswalds RC Church and Father Canning.

We pray for political stability in Zimbabwe: for the Middle East, Iraq, and Afghanistan and for those serving in the Armed Forces:  Ethiopia and the relief agencies bringing food to those in areas of famine: for a swift settlement to the hostilities between Russia and Georgia: and for World financial stability -stewardship.

In our community we pray for the Police and the Probation Service:  and for those who live in Parkdale Road, Westdale Road, Eastdale Road, Birchdale Road and Holly Grove.

We remember those in need: Ron Cooper, Margaret Osborne, Ted Critchley, Vita Bromwich, Joyce Price, Mavis Horton,  Jean Wright,  Pat Ahier,  James Allen,  Jenny Sankey,  Derek Sanson, Dawn Peake, Shirley Keeble, Doug Maines, Joan Sankey, Alf Critchley, Paul Hunter, Glenys Jones and Doug.Smith.

and for those who have recently died: Arthur Robinson

I realised a short time ago that I can still recite the prayers my mother taught me to say at bedtime as a child. At the time I think I rattled through them without much thought for the meaning, but on reflection I rather like this one:

Father, I thank you for the night

And for the pleasant morning light

For rest and food and loving care

And all that makes the world so fair

Help me to do the things I should

To be to others kind and good

In all I do, in all I say

To grow more loving every day.

Lighting a candle is a prayer. When we have gone it stays alight, kindling in the hearts and minds of others the prayers we have already offered for them and for others, for the sad, and the sick, and the suffering, and prayers of thankfulness too.

Lighting a candle is a parable, burning itself out, it gives light to others. Christ gave Himself for others. He calls us to give ourselves.

Lighting a candle is a symbol of love and hope, of light and warmth. Our world needs them all.

Thank you to Joyce Ashcroft who brought this poem from Christ Church School to share with us.

God bless thy year, thy coming in, thy going out, thy rest, thy travelling about, the rough, the smooth, the bright, the drear, God bless thy year.
