SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE (AND TEA)

The serving of coffee after the Sunday morning service started when Tom and Emma Moffatt were here.  We didn't have a kitchen then, and each Sunday large flasks were filled at home with hot water and the coffee was poured at the back of church.

It became much easier once the extension was built and we had a kitchen, albeit a small one, with all facilities. We have a good group of people working on a rota basis, which means we are each "on coffee" about once every 12 weeks, but more volunteers would be appreciated.

Many thanks to all both past and present for their help in keeping the Sunday morning refreshments going.  It is much appreciated as we gather after the service to chat.  If you feel you could help with this please contact Jean Byrne on 815361 or Barbara Crozier on 814421.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Report on January's PCC Meeting

There were a couple of significant items under discussion during the meeting. First was a report on the meeting of the Mission Sub-committee at which learning opportunities were discussed. Christ Church has been running bible study classes for several months but the uptake has been disappointingly low, despite trying both daytime and evening sessions. One suggestion is that the sessions are held too infrequently and that if they were more often, they would be more popular.

In another development the Group of Churches (Padgate, Cinnamon Brow, Birchwood and Woolston) have agreed to start a rolling programme of Alpha courses, so that across the area there is always one course under way. Alpha is a well-known bible study course aimed particularly at people starting their journey in faith.

Debbie Jacques presented the draft annual accounts, which if it is not too much of a pun, are like a curate’s egg – good in part. We were encouraged that overall finances have not suffered and that planned giving has actually gone up by 6%. The bad news is that again we are unable to meet all our monthly Diocesan Quota payments for 2011. We will manage ten out of twelve, the same as in 2010.

There was also further discussion on the impact of reduced clergy numbers on the four Churches in the Group, and this is likely to remain under consideration for some time to come.

The final item to report is the PCC, through the Social Sub-committee, is going to consider how we might celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this summer – watch out for further news.

Christ Church Brownies and Guides

On Monday 17 October we joined our Methodist Guiding friends over the bridge, to celebrate the North West Region’s 40th Anniversary, with a Ruby Party.

The party started at 6 pm with Rainbows and Brownies and finished at 9 pm with the Guides, with some in fancy dress on a red theme.  All took part in a range of craft activities and party games, with a Quiz for the guides.  We held a birthday party tea with red jellies, cakes and sandwiches and all sang “Happy Birthday” whilst cutting a huge birthday cake.  A good time was had by all, the girls all mixing in well with the other units.

Previously, on Saturday 8 October, the 13th Guides with some of their Burnley Guiding friends travelled to Blackpool to join girls from all over the North West for a “Grand Ruby Day Out”.  We had full use of the Pleasure Beach for a time, enjoyed the Ice Show in the afternoon and attended a Dance Workshop.  At the end of the (very wet) day, we joined in a record breaking dance routine all over the Pleasure Beach, to the surprise of the general public.

After Fish and Chips (what else in Blackpool?) we made a brief trip through the lights in our mini-bus, and all agreed we’d had a really “Grand Day Out”.

All our units have vacancies for girls, and we are desperate for leaders.  If you could (or know someone who can) spare us one or two hours a week, please telephone me on 01925 822506.

Padgate Scouts’ and Guides’ Fun and Games night had to be cancelled due to lack of support.  We are planning a Race Night in March 2012 and hope to get a better response.  These events are necessary to the upkeep of our Headquarters, and whilst our maintenance subscriptions go a long way in doing this, there are always unforeseen emergencies which need funds.  More information will be available in the New Year.
