The Men's Society

The Men's Society meets regularly during the winter months, usually on the last Tuesday of the month. Venues vary from the church meeting room, visits to local businesses etc, and local pubs. (where we usually end up, anyway!)   Do come and join us. We promise a lively evening wherever we meet.  New members are always welcome, and we look forward to seeing you.

Details of our meetings will appear on the monthly diary page from time to time.

IT'S A FAIR COP

At the end of November our Men’s Society was once again allowed out of the parish to visit the City of Manchester Police Museum in Newton Street, Manchester. We travelled from Birchwood Station in a crowded train along with David Perfect who was going to work (a habit that all of the society has ceased to be involved with – even our carer has now retired).

The weather was good as we walked from Piccadilly Station to the museum and we were soon fascinated by the volunteer ex-policemen who showed us the ancient truncheons, and cuffs, weapons and transport. We were taken into the original charge room, then through into the cells where we always have volunteers to sit on the toilets and lie on the beds.

Then we went upstairs into a court room which had been transferred from Ashton, where we were able to stand in the dock or sit in the judge’s chair. Then we went into another room to watch a film about serving in the Liverpool force about the time of Z Cars.

Eventually we left the museum in search of lunch; it was beginning

to rain as we walked through Piccadilly into Market Street and found an ancient hostelry to use as shelter from the weather. We queued at the bar as the choices gradually fell in amount - they ran out of steak pie, lasagne, rice, salad - leaving a few cool chips and a doubtful quiche. Fortunately Frank found a restaurant upstairs which had a full menu, so the last to be served fed well.

Because we fed at different times, we split up after lunch intending to visit the Continental markets, but it was pouring down when we left the pub and the stall-holders were sheltering from the Manchester weather. There was no sign of the rest of our party, so three of us walked into the wind and rain back to Deansgate station.

Black with rain, with water running off our noses we staggered on to the train where we were surprised to find part of our group had caught the train at Piccadilly, and the rest had boarded at Oxford Road - then all seemed drier than us. It was good to get home for a shower.
