Eyes and Ears - your help please
You are my ears and eyes!!!!!
Sometimes it is not easy to keep in constant touch with all that is going on in the Parish. Now that Denise has relinquished parish duties here at Christ Church it is even more important that I am kept in touch with personal matters such as illness, hospitalisation or other pastoral concerns. Please never assume that I know or I am too busy. I am always grateful for information and will act upon it accordingly. If I am not in, please do leave a message on my answerphone or listen to the instructions on whom to contact, it will always be acted upon in some way or other. As a general rule I have now changed my “day off” from Tuesdays to Fridays. However on certain Fridays this will not be possible owing to parish commitments and weddings etc. I really am grateful to you for your support and co-operation in my ministry and ask for your continued support and forbearance as we move into this new stage in my ministry here at Padgate. NEWS FROM ST CYPRIAN'S CHURCH
On 3 August we were delighted to share our worship with Revd. David and Mrs Wendy Lewis from St Cyprian’s Church in Liverpool. David took the opportunity to reflect on the links and friendships between Christ Church and St Cyprian’s. David has kindly taken the time to reproduce his talk for Grapevine, which is repeated here.
I am retiring in September - sob, sob! As Wendy and I reflected upon who and where we wanted to visit in our last few weeks here, Christ Church was high on our list. We wanted to come and worship with you as an acknowledgement to God and to you of our appreciation of the link that we have had with you and the friendships we have made over the past twelve years or more. We remember with gratitude and appreciation meals together, shared walks even when the rain was horizontal(!), special services, pantomimes (despite all your rudeness about Liverpool!), some very special Parish Weekends and, perhaps most of all, our lovely shared Passover meals each Easter, when so many of you have been able to come and join us for those special and memorable celebrations of God's enduring commitment to us all as our Rescuer. Wendy and I personally and many of us at St Cyprian's have been enriched immeasurably by those occasions, and we hope you have been too. Our link has been very important to us, and we have learned and received a great deal from you, as we hope you have from us. So we are really grateful to Revd. Tom Moffatt, who made the original approach, and to Revd. Stephen Attwater, who was very happy to continue the link when he arrived. We have never sought to be too ambitious in what we have offered, and that seems to have worked well. So we hope too that all of you, and Mike, the new vicar at St Cyp's, and the folk there, will sustain the link and enjoy each other's ministry and friendship long into the future.
So this is really a thank you - a huge thank you to you for your partnership with us in the Gospel and in very special friendship, and to God for all he has given to us all through it. God bless you all. David & Wendy Lewis

THANK YOU, DON
Padgate has been well blessed over the years with countless willing volunteers, but, in recent times, seldom has anyone held onto the same post for 33 years. Don Binks has held the position of Church Treasurer for this period of time and has steered us successfully through all our financial commitments, managing to remain sane and cheerful despite all frustrations. Don has now at long last succeeded in handing on his books and, as a token of our gratitude, at the end of the service on 25 May, the Rector made him a presentation of a voucher towards the cost of a golf trolley and also presented flowers to Barbara for her support.
Well done Don, and thank you from all of us. Thank you to Debbie Jacques for agreeing to take over the role of Treasurer. Doug Smith, Churchwarden
BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY AND DEDICATION FESTIVAL
We are taking part in a national campaign to welcome people “back to Church” who haven’t been for a while. If you know someone, a friend or neighbour, who hasn’t been to Christ Church for a while, we would like to invite them to our special “Back to Church Sunday Service” on 28 September at 10.30 am. This will also be our Dedication Festival.
Please let Barbara Binks, Laura Lawrence or Helen Barker have details of those you feel may wish to be invited.
The following extract was found on the internet. With “Back to Church Sunday” this month it seemed an apt analogy to include it here.
A Churchgoer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to Church every Sunday. “I've gone for thirty years now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.”
This started a real controversy in the “Letters to the Editor” column, much to the delight of the Editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: “I’ve been married for thirty years now. In that time my partner has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this, they all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my partner had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to Church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!”
